DC Web Women Kicks Off 12 Year Anniversary
With High Profile Video Panel
High Impact and Hot Online Topic Sets Tone for Group’s Celebratory Event
March 23, 2007 [Washington, DC] — Renowned Washington-metro area new media group DC Web Women (DCWW), a virtual community devoted to encouraging women in new media since 1995, will commemorate its 12th year anniversary on April 19, 2007 with a high-profile Web 2.0 theme spotlighting a hot topic in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing web arena: online video production.
“When DCWW first began,” says Jill Morgan Foster, video documentarian and DCWW Events Chair, “the Web was also equally as young but held an enticing yet unclear future. On our 12th year of community-driven focus on new media issues of relevance, we honor DCWW's progress as well as the Web's new Web 2.0 era, a time where Time Magazine's Person of the Year was voted as ‘You,’ as in me, as in all of us living amidst limitless democratic video production possibilities.”
The savvy Web 2.0 Video panel to be held on this celebratory evening will include a stellar panel of high-profile video professionals with a hands-on pulse in the online video industry such as Andy Carvin, a Web 2.0 strategist & senior product manager for online communities at National Public Radio and Jonny Goldstein, known video producer, talk show host, videoblogger, public speaker, comedian, and consultant based in Washington D.C. Other panelists, such as Beth Kanter, a social media expert specializing in the nonprofit sector and Maryam Scoble, Podtech's online video content manager will join the event via video-conference. Additionally, Phil Shapiro, a self-described 'public geek' from the public library in Takoma Park, Maryland and also known for his videoblogging teachings and digital storytelling for the Takoma Park Recreation Department, will also be in attendance.
Having educational and accessible new media events such as this, as well as many other similar panels and events planned for the near future, is in line with one of DCWW’s key goals: to remain a viable, credible and relevant resource to its 4000+ professional women subscribers. “We aim to encourage women in new media,” says Mayra Ruiz-McPherson, Marketing Chair for the organization. “And part of that encouragement includes providing regular venues for training and opportunities to discover new media outlets to keep our membership informed, competitive and current.”
