DC Web Women Member Education Workshop Policy

Overview of Workshops:

The DC Web Women Member Education Committee's goal is to provide low-cost, current, competitive, and convenient training for women in Internet-related fields. Most of our trainers and training spaces are volunteered to benefit our membership and so, these workshops are for women on the DC Web Women list only. Keep in mind that a larger list membership is essential in creating a bigger and better knowledge base for all our members.

We have decided to have two workshops per month on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays (Nov. and Dec being exceptions to this rule due to holidays). Also, we will attempt to have one workshop per month in DC and one workshop per month in either VA or MD. Once trainers and locations are confirmed for a particular month, a schedule of courses will be posted to the website. We hope to alternate Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced HTML, Web graphics, and programming (Javascript, CSS, ASP, CGI/Perl) classes.

Cost of Workshops:

DC Web Women has integrated with Paypal to enable our members to pay for workshops online simply, safely, and easily. For folks who use Paypal, workshops are a bargain price of $20. For members who wish to pay at the workshop itself, please bring $25. The Member Education committee reserves the right to increase (or reduce) the fee for specific workshops if we feel that circumstances call for it. Please make a "special effort" to bring exact change (preferably cash) to the workshop. It'll help move things along and the workshop coordinator in charge will certainly appreciate it!

We'll accept a check; however, a returned check automatically incurs a $15 administrative fee and prohibits the member from attending any future meetings until all monies are paid in-full via cashier's check or money order. Sorry, but we aren't a big money organization. A bounced check really racks up the charges very quickly.

An announcement will be made to the list stating Workshop topic, date, time, location, price, and number of reservations accepted at least one week prior to the Workshop (we hope :). Emailed reservations for workshops should not be sent and will not be accepted until the next morning (probably around 9am, but this may vary). Note: this change was made to give digest readers a better chance of reserving spots for upcoming workshops. The digest is not compiled until late in the evening and thus these women did not receive the workshop notification until it was far too late to act. We hope that by accepting reservations the next morning, digest and regular list members should have an equal chance of reserving a spot.

Please respond directly to the Workshop Coordinator who posted the Announcement. Do not attempt the following:

  • Do not forward Workshop announcements to non-DC Web Women members. The Workshop Coordinator in charge will compare the emailed requests for a reserved spot with the list membership. There are no exceptions to this rule.

  • Do not request to reserve a spot for you and a co-worker, family member, sister, dog, cat, whatever. One email equals one reserved chair.

  • Do not reserve a spot if you are sorta kinda sure that you might be able to make it.

Non-Attendance Policy:

If you CANNOT make it, please give the workshop coordinator in charge 24 hour advance notice so that she may contact the Waiting list. If you do this much, you are a responsible, considerate member. If you don't, you will have the honor of being added to the Blackball list: an elite group of women who cannot attend workshops for 2 months because they couldn't be bothered to call.

When the class is full, a second Announcement will be posted to the list stating that the workshop is closed and listing those members that have reserved spots and those who are on the waiting list.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this. We just want everyone to have a better sense of how Workshops and reservations will be handled in the future.
