CONTENT STRATEGY IN A DAY with Rahel Bailie

in partnership with STC Washington, DC and Metro Baltimore Chapter

Saturday, September 17, 2011; 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (ET)

Universities at Shady Grove Conference Center
9630 Guldelsky Drive
Building II, Room 1042
Rockville, MD 20850-5822

Register now!

Content strategy is the current buzz, but how exactly to create an effective one is a different story. Content is only as good as the strategy behind it. The market has brought about profound changes in how we work with content throughout the entire content lifecycle, and how that affects how we do business, and our relationship to both management and customers. Content has a distinct lifecycle, and what happens in the analysis phase informs how the content behaves in the tactical phases. Any missteps early on means that the next iteration of that content will be harder to implement and maintain – and degrade the user experience.

This workshop discusses content within the phases of the content lifecycle, and illustrates the interdependencies within the user experience. Participants will discover a framework for developing content that aligns with user-centered design, from user research through personas and scenarios, to wireframes and content development. Whether you are on the marketing communications side, figuring out to leverage content for better conversion rates, or on the technical communications side, learning about the emergence of structured content and social documentation, or on the management side, looking at overall brand management, this workshop will yield valuable processes and techniques for better management of your content.

Participants are taken through a number of content strategy activities in the context of a typical content strategy project. Some of the learner outcomes include:

  • Making informed decisions when developing a strategic content plan
  • Finding techniques to leverage content in compelling ways
  • Identifying the key deliverables of a content strategy
  • Learning how to prepare specific deliverables in context of a content strategy
  • Becoming the content advocate on a user experience team

Note: Do bring a laptop if possible, to get the most from the workshop. Templates will be provided, and participants will use them to work through real-life challenges. Be prepared for an interactive experience.

About The Speaker

Rahel Anne Bailie is a content strategist with a skill set encompassing content management, business analysis, information architecture, and communications. She operates Intentional Design, helping clients analyze their business requirements and spectrum of content to get the right fit for their content development and management needs, and facilitates transitions to new business processes, content models, and technology implementations.

Her experience gives her an intimate understanding of end-to-end processes, from requirements-gathering to implementation. She is an STC Fellow, and holds memberships in various associations to stay current in pertinent practice areas. She presents on the topic of content strategy at conferences across North America and Europe, and was recently cited as one of the top ten most influential content strategists in the industry.

This event is brought to you by STC Washington, DC and Metro Baltimore Chapter

The Society for Technical Communication (STC) advances the theory and practice of technical communication across all user abilities and media so that both businesses and customers benefit from safe, appropriate, and effective use of products, information, and services. The Washington, DC and Metro Baltimore (WDC MB) Chapter offers opportunities to network with others in your field, explore your interests, and expand your education and skills. GROW and 1X57 present

A 2010 study by the Wikimedia Foundation revealed that barely 13 percent of Wikipedia contributors are female. Sue Gardner, the Foundation's Executive Director, is concerned that this gender imbalance has fueled an imbalance in information, with topics that typically interest Wikipedia's core contributor base, men in their late teens and twenties, growing daily while other entries stagnate with just a few sentences. Her goal is to increase the share of female contributors to 25 percent by 2015. (For more background, check out 9 Reasons Why Women Don't Edit Wikipedia).

Join us for this free 1/2 day workshop that aims to address the issue, starting at the very beginning of wiki editing. We'll explore why it's so important for girls and women to contribute to Wikipedia as well as how to join the editing community, including a review of guidelines for engagement.

We'll get hands-on by showing how to find information you need, setting up your Wikipedia user page, and finally editing articles. Advanced students are recommended to bring a project/topic of interest to work on in class, while beginners can simply participate in one of the general "gardening" tasks the instructors will provide.

While this workshop is specifically geared towards women and girls (who already have a familiarity using computers), men and boys are welcome to attend, especially parents and teachers. Come prepared to have fun, learn an invaluable skill and hang out with an amazing group of women and girls!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Amy Senger (@sengseng) and Steven Mandzik (@robotchampion) are cofounders of 1X57, a full service change agency for the social web. They met in 2006 while working as instructors for the revolutionary Intellipedia Development Cell where they became experts on Enterprise 2.0 and Web 2.0 technologies, and evangelists for wikis, blogs, Twitter, and many other social media applications. They were recently named 2011 Tech Titans by Washingtonian magazine.

Guest Gurus

Andrea R. Baker (@immunity) is a thought leader, public speaker, and life-long community manager (and former Queen Bee Intellipedia Community Manager). She is currently developing a course on community management for AIIM International where she is the Manager for Systems of Engagement Development.

Kirby Plessas (@kirbstr), is President of Plessas Experts Network, Inc, a small disabled veteran and woman owned company that specializes in bringing internet technology to government entities. She is a former US Army Arabic linguist and a technogeek who is excited to give more women a voice online.
