Job CornerPosting Jobs to the DCWW ListMany people ask why we don't have a separate mailing list for jobs. The DC Web Women Steering Committee has considered and decided against starting a separate mailing list for jobs for several reasons. First, the value of job listings on the main lists is too crucial to too many members to remove them to their own list. We understand that we all receive a large volume of e-mail; however, people offering jobs post with us precisely because we have such a large and strong community of technology talent, rather than just a small list exclusively for job seekers. Also, the job listings are helpful to people who are not searching. These listings let us know what skills are sought, what companies are hiring, and what employment trends are occurring in our industry. Many of our members pass on postings to people they know who arelooking for work. You may see the ideal job opening on the list and decide to apply even if you're not really job hunting. The posts are easy to filter and delete if you're not interested. Another benefit for all of us whether or not we're in the market for a new position is that recruiters are great sources of information. Many are happy to answer questions about interviewing, career paths, portfolios and resumes, cover letters, and more complex elements of the application process. Their visibility on the main list helps us know they're around to act as resources. Guidelines for Posting JobsThe Subject Line: Descriptive headings help list members decide whether they want to read your post. At a minimum, your header should say One Job Per Message: If at all possible, post only one job per message. This makes it easier for readers to digest the information you provide and, perhaps, to pass it on to others. Place Essential Info Near the Top: Please place the following either in the header or close to the top of the message:
Post Full Details: In the body of your message, include full information. Thanks to Wrrl and professional recruiter Sonya Morath for this suggested format:
Can We Pass It On? Finally, please state whether it is all right for Wrrls to forward the posting off the list. DCWW rules don't allow forwarding without the original poster's permission. How to PostIf You're a Member: Post as usual to the DCWW list. Not a Member? We'll be happy to post for you. Send a plain-text e-mail message, including your contact information, to jobs@dcwebwomen.org. Please observe the guidelines listed above. |
