Brianna Bowling

Member Spotlight: Brianna Bowling

It's no secret. Listmom extraordinaire, Brianna Bowling has been DCWW's netiquette maven since 1997 when there were fewer than 500 members. Now she oversees a team of assistant listmoms, each with her own specific domain. Brianna's other job is as a real mom to Forrest and Drew, and as a home-based business owner.

Five years ago when she had two youngsters still learning to toddle, Brianna browsed the local library's shelves for resources on the new thing called HTML. She had been offered an opportunity to do some HTML conversion by her husband's employer, a printing company. Now she owns her own company; the business called Zekiah now includes her husband (Dan), a sibling, and two other employees. A new "associate" is also expected to join this August. Steadily progressing, the company has grown from HTML conversion to web and database programming for the federal government, commercial businesses, and associations.

Wanna see some of her work? Take a gander at:

Brianna calls her career path "boring," but we don't think so. Her first job was finding expert witnesses for court cases. A natural segue was working for a technical recruiting and placement company. Wanting to spend quality time and raise her kids at home, she quit her job and sold real estate on the side. She wasn't completely out of the technology loop, though, since she was also doing technical writing. Her English degree attests to the fact that this uber-webmaster is also a master wordsmith.

Not content with running a business, she also teaches at a local community center. Her students are older women who are just getting involved with technology. Brianna says it's very satisfying because the skills they gain using the computer and getting involved with what technology can do "really empowers them."

Tired with that work? Not Brianna. She's also a Pets on Wheels volunteer and a referee for girls' field hockey, to name a few. Oh, and webmaster for a local 4-H club and her son's elementary school (not to mention being an active member of both groups). If Brianna had free time, she would be riding horseback. She says she tries to do so two or three times a week, but with her busy volunteer and work schedule, we're doubtful. She also claims to run, garden, and generally spend time outdoors. Yeah, wink wink.

All kidding aside, we know that working in technology means that you're going to end up with an interesting folder of favorite URLs. Brianna was kind enough to share some of the more interesting ones:

In her own words, Brianna explains what DCWW means to her:

"I volunteer for DCWW because I love the way it empowers women at all levels. It allows top level web executives to fill their company ranks with smart energetic women and it allows web newbies to connect with women to inspire them and answer everyday technical questions."

She credits DCWW for helping her to build her client base, but we owe her a big APPLAUSE for maintaining a pleasant level of civility on DCWW these many years.
