Member Spotlight: Carrie Hane Dennison

Carrie Hane DennisonFor Carrie Hane Dennison, DCWW terrific Program Co-Chair, life has taken twists and turns. "Not only have I come a long way from where I originally started my career," Carrie says. "I've come even farther from where I thought my career would go when I started college in 1989." Back then, at Northern Michigan University, Carrie planned to become a sport nutritionist, a natural since she was a high school athlete. Swimming was her sport. It still is. She still swims a couple nights a week, and also goes to the gym regularly after work.

Professionally, Carrie is in charge of all things web in her current position as the Web Editor for the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA). After launching their redesign early last year, she now manages the maintenance and upgrades of the site content and architecture.

This is not Carrie's first job with a military angle. Her career started in the foreign/defense policy arena when she worked for NAVAIR (Naval Air Systems Command) in foreign military sales logistics. Two years later, she decided that military logistics was not for her.

At her next position, Programs/Communications Director for the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE), Carrie dove into the web world. Although she had no prior web development experience, she oversaw the building of their first web site and then managed the development of the next generations. During her tenure at AFIRE, she reports, "I had already decided I liked the communications aspect of association management and turned my focus to the web, eventually seeking a full-time web position. It was this web work combined with my previous military experience that landed me at my current job."

Carrie has a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. When she was in college, she did better in her sociology class than her nutrition and chemistry classes, and decided to change her major from sports nutrition to political science.

On May 12, 2001, Carrie married Bill, who she'd been dating for over four years. She reports with a smile, "Bill and I met through a mutual friend of a friend. In our core group of friends we can play the 6-degrees of Lisa game – similar to the Kevin Bacon game." Bill and Carrie named their pure-bred mutt Cal after Bill's sports hero, Cal Ripken. The dog is a mix of Irish setter, chow chow and a few other unknown breeds. "Though he may sound odd – and he is – he is very cute!" she says.

Carrie loves to read and is currently engrossed in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, trying to get ahead of the movies. For fun she also enjoy concerts. "But," she reports, "I am perplexed by this summer's line-up of week-night concerts at Wolf Trap and Nissan Pavilion. Don't they know we work?" Her two favorite concerts were Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's 1999 reunion tour. Carrie reports, "I had row K seats on the floor at MCI Center and U2's Elevation Tour. In Philadelphia my husband's aunt had connections to get us into the "mixer" area – the part of the floor cordoned off in front of the sound equipment. And I still think that Elvis Costello was standing right next to me, but I was too afraid to ask him if that's who he was."

In addition to her work with DCWW, Carrie also belongs to the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives.
