D.C. Web Woman Named First Endowed Chair For Online Journalism
Mindy McAdams, former Web strategist at the American
Press Institute, interactive consultant, and journalist, has been appointed to the Knight Chair in Journalism at the University of Florida in Gainesville, beginning in August. She plans to focus on how new
media technologies affect the practice of journalism and democracy.
Mindy told Editor & Publisher columnist Steve Outing that she does not plan to emphasize teaching how to use new technologies like streaming media and Java, but rather how a participatory medium like
the Internet affects public discourse and decision-making.
Mindy has been thinking about Cybermedia since the late 1980s, when she worked on a weekly business newspaper that covered the computer and telecommunications industries. She earned a master's degree in media studies at The New School for Social Research in New York in 1993. A year and a half after that, she helped launch the Washington Post online (formerly known as Digital Ink) on a pre-Web proprietary platform. She later worked as a consultant in content, navigation, structure, and usability, dividing her time between Toronto and Washington, D.C.
Mindy has written a book, a number of professional articles, online materials and reviews for fellow Web site producers and designers, including:
-
"The Art of Cross-Promoting Your Print and Online Products."
In The Digital Edge (an online publication of the
