Member Spotlight: Heidi Swenson

You may know about Digital Division as one of the DCWW sponsors , but you may not know about the DC Web Woman who is president of Digital Division. Her name is Heidi Swenson, and she is this month's featured member.

Heidi says she "fell in love with the Web" when, as communications coordinator for an association, she created its first intranet. With the inevitable snowball effect, Heidi began doing more work as an association webmaster, and also kept busy with freelance work and training others on web design. Heidi said that, "Once I was introduced to the Web, I immediately felt pulled into the field, and it's been a good fit."

After about three years, Heidi's client base for freelance web development and web training started to steadily increase. It built up so much that in 1999, Heidi took the plunge and started her own company. Now, her web development clients include federal government agencies, nonprofit associations, and multimillion-dollar companies, and she runs classes for newbies looking to get their feet wet in HTML, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks (Webmaster Boot Camp) as well as those looking for more advanced web development Cold Fusion training (Web Programmer Boot Camp). The success of her Boot Camps has led to the creation of the fun Digital Division "mascot" called Sergeant Weaver.

She is currently working on a master's in visual information technologies at George Mason, a complement to her BA in mass communications. Ever the great communicator, Heidi has also advised Women's Center, Capital PC Users Group, and DCWW participants about web careers, in addition to teaching the ubiquitous HTML, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks workshops.

At home, she and her husband (Erin)--who she credits with helping set up her office and computer lab--enjoy what they call a cheap form of entertainment. They like to watch their intellectually challenged cat "Quebert the Fattie" chase his tail on a nightly basis while "Babie Stewie" (Quebert's brother) looks on in disgust.

In the company of her cats, or at work, you might find Heidi surfing:

For work-related information and happenings, she'll surf over to Washtech.com and Netpreneur.org.

By the way, one of our own will soon be a published author! Heidi is very excited about her company's publishing of the Webmaster Boot CampTM book in October.
