GROW (Girls Rock On the Web) is a DCWW initiative with the goal of introducing 8-12 year old girls to technology – specifically web development and coding in the hopes that by teaching young girls to code will help spark their interest in STEM-related opportunities as they get older.
As the numbers of women in STEM continues to rank behind their male counterparts, it is more important than ever to encourage girls and young women to enter STEM-related fields*.
With the help of DCWW volunteers, GROW girls learn HTML, layout, and storytelling so that they could share their interests on their own web site. Each DCWW volunteer is trained to to work with each girl and support them through their day of learning.
By the end of the day, each girl leaves with a spark that will encourage her to pursue a career in technology.
